The Shelter of Each Other – Mary Pipher

Relevant on every page. This is one of those ‘everyone should read this book’ kind of reads.

I love these books that put into clear relief what many of us have vague assumptions about, and where the premises and assertions intuitively make sense. For instances, most of us, if asked, could probably list a number of major factors and influences in terms of people’s general well-being. Family and society would probably rank large among those lists. Mary Pipher unpacks with great clarity how the interplay between families and society affects the dynamics between family members, and how this in turn wears on our mental health and well-being. It seems like by turning towards each other, and by seeking deeper connection with our immediate families, or close friends, we could both increase well-being and add more resilience to people’s lives.

It would please me greatly to write something somewhere between a summary and an exegesis of this book. I hope to get to that someday. Definitely worth picking up – I immediately bought several copies for people. Rich perspective.
