This is a great first-hand account of a child’s experience many years ago wanting to learn how to read while living in the Arctic. It highlights experience that would have been typical of a Northern Native Canadian during the reform school era, that many of the elder generation lived through. It is a great read to help establish some baseline understanding and compassion. Spoiler Alert – Margaret’s story ended much better than many other similar people. It is hard to appreciate both just how resilient the human species is, and how difficult of an experience the Residential School System would have been for Native children.
